When it comes to protecting home computers, we recommend AVG free. There are many pay for anti-virus and anti-spyware programs out on the market that would have you believe otherwise, however, you have to wonder what is motivating them to say this. Probably money. However, in our experience, we have found that the free version of AVG is as good, and in most cases, better than anything you will pay for. Oh yes, those pay versions will claim that AVG free doesn't go far enough to block spam, malware (spyware or rootkits), Trojans and worms, but neither do they.
There is not one single anti-virus or anti-spyware program that can protect your computer 100% ... so why pay for it.
However, if you own a business, it is important that you have virus protection that is licensed (aka - a pay version). The reason? Money. So what's stopping you from loading a free version of an anti-virus program onto your business computer? Money. If you are caught by 'the powers that be' or a company that offers both a free anti-virus program and a pay version, they can fine you for operating without a paid license. It's really up to you.
